HOW TO // Starting A Beauty Blog

How To Start A Beauty Blog

I know this post isn't going to be overly useful to anyone that follows my blog as you have all probably started your own Beauty Blog already but today I seen a thread started on Beautylish by a girl asking for advice on starting a blog. I remember when I first started to use Blogger I had no idea, the blogs I followed seemed to be perfect and everyone seemed to know what they were doing. It was a little daunting at first. I thought a short little post would be useful to someone if they are anything like I was and too shy to email someone to ask for help.

Picking a name
This is the part that took me the longest, I just couldn't settle with one ha. Your blog name can be anything from a saying, phrase or even your name. It doesn't matter what you choose, just make sure you like it as you're probably going to be known as "your name" from "your blog name" in the blogging community haha.

Design and Layout
Going for a simple design to start with is probably best. If you're not a whiz with HTML it's going to make things easier on yourself if you leave the fancy blog designs to a later date. My first blog layout was just a background I got from Google which was changed multiple times before sticking with good old plain white.

Photographs
Natural day light is your friend. Clear photographs of whatever you're blogging about attracts people a lot more than a blurry photo. Natural day light is probably the best way to get clear photos and will save you a lot of hassle so you don't have to mess around with lighting. I wish I could go back and take my own advice when I started blogging, a lot of my earlier pictures are terrible ha.

Content
Regardless of everything I've just said, your content is the most important as it's what people are coming on your blog to read. "What to blog about" was also something that was asked in the thread so I've made a little list of blog posts that I blog about or seen repeatedly on my dashboard.

The Golden Rule

YOUR blog, YOUR rules
Everything I have written in this post is a rough idea about starting a blog not a post on what you should do. You make the rules and should be writing about what you want, even if it's about your favourite pair of socks haha. Never let anyone dictate to you about what you should be writing about or how your blog should be designed. I'm no blogging expert but if you have any questions feel free to ask :)

March Favourites

Please excuse the overly bright photograph, my camera decided to play up

Batiste Dry Shampoo - As we did have a lot of hot weather, this has had a lot of use in March. When it's hot my hair tends to get a little more greasy, especially the fringe area when I'm pushing it back etc so this has restrained me a little from everyday hair washing. I love the Fresh fragrance because it's well... Fresh?

Moroccan Oil - If you read my last post about the 6 Week Hair Challenge you will know I've been using this after I trimmed my hair. Yes, you've all seen it repeatedly on Blogs and YouTube but I had to add this in as it's my most used product in March. Since using this the texture of my hair has been transformed, it doesn't have that 'crunch' anymore.

Lee Stafford Argan Oil - I bought this before the Moroccan Oil and was impressed, it actually smells better as well. I don't think it's as nourishing as Moroccan Oil but it's still had it's fair amount of use.

Palmers Cocoa Butter - This is my 'go to' heavy duty body lotion.I like to use this once a week to keep my skin smooth, it's a bit heavy for every day use though. I've recently had a routine of exfoliating, epilating and then using this, my skin feels so much smoother and less irritated after.

Lancome Hypnose Drama Mascara - I'm sure most of you had this sample from Glossybox, I really love this mascara! It hold my lashes in place really well. Only downfall? It's a nightmare to remove.

Elf Conditioning Lip Balm - This awesome for the warmer weather, a tinted lip balm with a lovely colour pay off with nice packaging. Winner. This weather change up from cold to hot to cold again is playing havoc with my lips so I've been reaching for lip balms over lipstick this month.

Jean Paul Gaultier Classique - I'm terrible at describing scents, so I won't but I've been using this a lot in March as it's really light.

Samantha Chapman Real Techniques Brushes - I'm so glad I purchased the Core Collection from Boots a while back, I have used them all and really love the finish they give when applying make up. My favourite have to be the Buffing Brush and the Contour Brush. They're really good quality and are reasonably priced as they cost roughly £20 for the set so that's about £5 a brush.

Urban Decay Naked 2 - Last but not least is my Naked2, after all the hype and excitement when buying this palette after a few weeks I neglected it. I have now rekindled my love for it. I'm also really excited for their new create your own palette system but I think the United Kingdom might have to wait a while. Let's hope Kelly is OK this time, guys haha.
